When is the best time to replace a roof in Missoula?

Does Montana license roofing contractors?
There is no roofing-specific state license or exam. Since January 2026 construction contractors are licensed by the Department of Labor and Industry under Title 37 chapter 45, replacing the older registration system - but the chapter is narrower than it sounds.
It does not reach an independent contractor with no employees, a job under $2,500 in labor and materials (with express anti-splitting language), work under exclusive federal jurisdiction, or an enrolled tribal member or majority tribally-owned business operating wholly within reservation boundaries. Five of our towns sit inside those boundaries.
A solo roofer with no employees also carries an independent contractor exemption certificate rather than workers' compensation, which is lawful and looks like an absence if you do not know to ask for it. So ask for the license number where the chapter applies, and the exemption certificate where it does not.
Why do you price the north and south slopes of my roof separately?
Because in this valley they live in different climates. The winter sun sits low, the ridges shade the north side of a house early in the afternoon, and a shaded plane can carry its load for weeks after the sunny one is bare. We put the heavier membrane where the sun does not reach and use the standard detail where it does, which usually costs less than a uniform premium spec.
Is a metal roof a good idea here?
Yes, but not for the reason it is usually sold. Metal will not shed continuously through a settled inversion, because the panel never warms enough to release. It holds everything, then lets it all go on the first warm afternoon. That is manageable, but it means the planning happens on the ground: where the release lands, and what is standing there.
Can you fix a leak in the middle of winter?
We can stop it, and we will be honest that stopping is not fixing. Roof cement and most flashing sealants will not bond to a cold, frosted surface, so a winter repair is mechanical rather than adhesive and it is temporary by design.
